AB 939 Fee On Solid Waste & Recycling Collection Service

Garbage is the stuff we don’t need anymore, the junk we think is useless. It’s the rejects we don’t want to deal with and the cast-offs from the way we live. It comes from our homes, businesses, government agencies and institutions like school and hospitals. Garbage is also known as “municipal solid waste.” Americans create nearly 210 million tons of municipal solid waste each year. Of all the environmental problems we face, garbage is one each of us can really do something about. Choices we make every day affect the amount and types of garbage we throw away. When we are careful about what we purchase, reuse things rather than buy new ones and recycle, we not only make less garbage, but we also save natural resources and energy and make less pollution.”

BATTERIES & FLUORESCENT LIGHTS

Ni-Cd (Nickel Cadmium), Li-ion (Lithium ion) and Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries now have the “chasing arrows” symbol and the word “Recycle”. The toxics in these batteries can leach into water supplies, if land filled; or enter the atmosphere, if incinerated. Safely dispose of your batteries by taking them to a Household Hazardous Waste drop off facility or to a participating retail store.

Battery & Fluorescent Program Update (April 2009)

Did You Know … Household batteries, cell phones, and fluorescent lighting are considered hazardous because they contain toxic ingredients, including mercury, lead, and cadmium. Because of these contaminants, it is illegal to throw away these items in your garbage or recycling can, or to dispose of them at area landfills. Instead, you should take back dead batteries, cell phones, and fluorescent lights to any area business that sells them ~ for free disposal.

Beginning in April of 2008, a county-wide ordinance established a “Take Back Program" for household batteries, cell phones, and all fluorescent lighting. Rest assured that if a business in our community sells batteries, cell phones, or fluorescent lighting, they are required to take back those items from the public for free disposal.
