MTBE Monitoring Efforts

The LOCSD an active participant with the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (CRWQCB) technical work group has been monitoring and tracking the investigation and clean-up efforts for MtBE underway located in front of the Von shopping center on Los Osos Valley Road.

Concerns about MtBE in water supplies prompted the LOCSD to investigate district well sites several years ago, especially located within 1500 feet of gas stations in Los Osos that could be vulnerable to contamination.  The district operates only one well, the 10th Street facility that resides within this 1500 feet radius zone. Sampling for this notorious gas additive was initiated in August 2000, and has continued on a regular monthly basis. Well production has been decreased as a preventative measure against drawing the contaminant into the well zone. It is important to note that to-date no MtBE has been detected at anytime, and the 10th St. well has proven to check out as a clean and wholesome water supply well.
